Education - Trauma Informed Care & Residents' Rights Choices & Preferences
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Teasley Ballroom 5 & 6
Presented by Cat Selman, Educator, Motivator, Communicator, Consultant, Author, The Healthcare Communicators Incorporated CMS states "The facility must ensure that residents who are trauma survivors receive culturally competent, trauma-informed care in accordance with professional standards of practice and accounting for residents’ experiences and preferences in order to eliminate or mitigate triggers that may cause re-traumatization of the resident.” Every employee delivering care or service to any resident should have training and competency skills in this area. The requirement addresses much more than just PTSD! This session will address aspects of trauma informed care as it relates to the CMS requirements: physical trauma, mental/emotional/psychosocial trauma, survey focus, documentation/care planning, as well as training issues. This is a session that every employee in your facility needs - taught in a manner that everyone can understand!
Residents' Rights are guaranteed by the federal 1987 Nursing Home Reform Law. The law requires each nursing home to care for its residents in a manner that promotes and enhances the quality of life of each resident, ensuring dignity, choice, and self-determination. Each person is guaranteed those "rights." "Choice" is the act of making a selection; liberty or freedom to choose. "Preference" is a greater liking for one alternative over another or others. Sounds like a lot of "gobbledygook" when you start making the comparison between the words. At times it sounds like they all mean the "same," and other times, it appears as if they are all three, truly, different. Is it important for us to know the difference? You had better believe it!! During surveys, facilities are being asked about their policies regarding "choice" and "preference." Your staff is being observed to determine if preferences and choices are being honored. The MDS 3.0 is filled with data regarding what is "important" to a resident, and if they have certain "preferences." It gets more confusing, and we continue to receive citations for not getting it "right." In this session, Cat will 1) explain the differences between the terms, 2) share information as to how surveyors are assessing this area, and 3) o er successful staff practices and strategies.

Education - CMS RoP Guidance Medically Related Social Services & Phase 3: What's Coming?
1:15 PM - 4:30 PM
Teasley Ballroom 5 & 6
Presented by Cat Selman, Educator, Motivator, Communicator,
Consultant, Author, The Healthcare Communicators Incorporated CMS Requirement of Participation: "The facility must provide medically related social services to attain or maintain the highest practicable physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of each resident. Facilities must identify the need for medically-related social services and ensure that these services are provided. It is not required that a qualified social worker necessarily provide all of these services, except as required by State law." In this session, Cat will be detailing the specific “medically related social services” that surveyors will be looking for. These specific needs are required on both the Baseline Care Plan that is developed within 48 hours of a resident’s admission, as well as the individualized Comprehensive Care Plan.
Phase 3 of the CMS Requirements of Participation goes into effect November 28, 2019. This final phase will provide facilities with the most challenges to assure compliance. In this session Cat will give an overview of the requirements that will be a part of Phase 3, and provide recommendations/suggestions regarding systemic process and staff training that should be in place PRIOR to the effective date. Specifically, she will be addressing person-centered care planning, trauma-informed care, infection control, sufficient and competent staffing, as well as staff training. You have several months to get everything “in place” for Phase 3…will you be ready?
